I have a 35 johnson 1983 and the key switch all of a sudden will not kill the motor. I have a ground with the key on or off at the black/yel on the three wire coil plug on both sides... what is the easiest way to test for the fault?

Hi, it sounds like it's in the ground at the switch.  All the switch does is ground out the black with yellow stripe wire at the control. This kills the ignition. You will want to check your ground connections at the switch and in the control box if it's not a dash mounted switch. If that's not it check continuity on the black wire from the switch to the motor. If that's not it check continuity between the black and yellow post and the black post on the switch with the key off. There should be a reading with it off and none with it on.  Mike S
